YOU ASKED.
WE ANSWERED.
Everything you need to know about playing, winning, hosting, and booking — answered honestly.
Getting started at the bar.
Q.01How much does it cost to play?+
Nothing. Trivia is always free to play at every This Is a Clue venue. We're paid by the bar, not by you. Come as a team of 1–8, order a drink if you'd like, and play.
Q.02Do I need a reservation?+
At most venues, no. Just show up 15–20 minutes before start time to snag a table and get your team registered. A few of our busiest rooms can fill up fast on holiday weeks, so it's worth calling the bar directly if you're coming with a big group.
Q.03How big can my team be?+
Teams can be anywhere from 1 to 8 players. Solo players are absolutely welcome. The sweet spot is 4–5 players: enough for a specialist in every category, small enough to make decisions quickly.
Q.04What if we arrive late?+
You can join any game in progress, but you'll start from zero points. We keep registration open the whole time.
Q.05What cities do you run trivia in?+
We currently run weekly live trivia in Denver, Westminster, Colorado Springs, Aurora, Golden, Fort Collins, and Boulder. Check the Find a Game map for exact locations and nights.
Q.06Are your trivia nights kid-friendly?+
Most of our games happen in bars and taprooms after 7pm, so the environment is generally adult. The questions themselves are clean, but bar settings vary. If you're bringing kids, check the venue's own policy before you come.
How it works.
Q.07How does a typical game work?+
Three rounds of 10 questions each. One of those rounds is always a picture round. The host reads each question aloud, no app required. Teams write answers on paper, hand in sheets after each round, and the host scores them live. If teams are tied at the end, there's a tiebreaker question. Plan for about 2 hours. First and second place win prizes; hosts sometimes give out bonus points for things like best team name.
Q.08How are your questions written?+
Fresh every week by our in-house question team. No recycled pub-quiz dumps, no AI-generated filler. Three rounds of 10 questions: general knowledge, current events, pop culture, local Colorado references, science, history, sports. Categories rotate so there's something in every game for every kind of brain.
Q.09Do you do themed nights?+
Yes. Several times a year we run themed specials: 90s Night, Movie Night, Colorado History Night, Holiday editions, and venue-specific themes tied to events at the bar. Follow us on Instagram or check the schedule page for announcements.
Q.10Do hosts do anything special at their nights?+
Every host brings their own personality to the game. The best way to find out is to listen to your host at the start of the night. They'll usually tell you what's coming.
Q.11What if there's a tie?+
Ties go to a sudden-death tiebreaker question, usually a number-guess (closest without going over). If it's still a tie after that, the host uses a second tiebreaker. We have never in our history ended a night with a true tie, though we've come close.
Q.12Can I dispute a judge's ruling?+
Yes, respectfully. The host has final say, but we take disputes seriously and will overrule ourselves when the evidence is clear. Bring a source on your phone if you're confident. Being loud and being right are two different things, and only one of them works.
What you win.
Q.13What are the prizes?+
Prizes vary by venue. First place wins bar credit or a gift card, second place gets a tab or prize, and we almost always give away extra prizes throughout the night for team names, bonus rounds, and random draws. Ask your host before the game starts.
The practical stuff.
Q.14Do I need to download an app?+
No app, no account, no sign-up. You show up, write your team name on a sheet, and play. We keep it analog: pens and paper, no screens between you and the question. Your phone is only needed if you want to check the schedule or find the venue.
Q.15How long does a game last?+
Plan for about 2 hours, start to last-round scores. Some venues run tighter, others stretch a bit if the crowd is rowdy and the host is having a good night. Most games start between 7:00 and 8:00pm and wrap before 10:00pm.
Q.16Is trivia accessible for people with disabilities?+
We run games at a wide range of venues, and accessibility varies by location. If you have a specific need (hearing loop, wheelchair access, low-lighting sensitivity), email us at info@thisisaclue.com and we'll point you to venues that fit. We're working to tag venues by accessibility in our directory.
Bring trivia to your room.
Q.17Can I bring trivia to my bar or restaurant?+
Yes, and we'd love to talk. We partner with bars, taprooms, and restaurants across the Front Range to fill slow weeknights with a reliable, spending crowd. Most venues see a 40–80% weeknight sales lift within the first six weeks. Fill out the inquiry form on the For Venues page and we'll follow up same-day on weekdays.
Q.18Can you host a private event?+
All the time. Corporate team-building, birthday parties, bachelorette weekends, holiday parties, conferences. We've hosted games for groups of 15 to 400. We bring the host, the questions, a custom round if you want one, and scoring. You pick the venue or we help you find one.
The company.
Q.19How long has This Is a Clue been running?+
We've been running live trivia nights in Colorado since 2010. Fifteen years. Over 10,000 trivia nights. Locally owned and operated, not a franchise, not an algorithm.
Q.20How do I follow you for schedule updates?+
The fastest way is Instagram (@thisisaclue). We post weekly schedules, themed night announcements, and last-minute additions there first. You can also bookmark the Find a Game page, which pulls live from our schedule database.
Q.21Where does the name come from?+
Every good question has a clue inside it. So does every good bar. Put enough of both in the same room and you've got something worth showing up for on a Tuesday.

We fix that.
We run weekly trivia at bars, taprooms, and restaurants across Colorado that want to turn a dead weeknight into one of their busiest nights. Turnkey host, fresh questions, sound gear, and a crowd that comes back.
